Description

The town of Dayton (pop. 1400), located less than seven miles from the center of Harrisonburg (pop. 44,000) in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, has many qualities for success in the event of energy price spikes or disruptions to global supply chains.

A community of thousands of Old Order Mennonites has been using traditional approaches to farming, transport, and energy for around two hundred years. Horses and buggies go through town every day.

The Arts & Business Connection of Dayton, a local affiliate of the Artisans Center of Virginia, is exploring opportunities for residents and students to prepare for the 'design economy.' It is preparing with the newly-established Artisans Courtyard workshops on “homeshoring” in preparation for a Makerspace Lab with 3D printers.

Property values average about 30-40 percent of those in the Washington, DC area. Food prices average about half that of those found in Northern Virginia's urban and suburban areas.
