Dayton
Description
The town of Dayton (pop. 1400), located less than seven miles from the center of Harrisonburg (pop. 44,000) in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, has many qualities for success in the event of energy price spikes or disruptions to global supply chains.
A community of thousands of Old Order Mennonites has been using traditional approaches to farming, transport, and energy for around two hundred years. Horses and buggies go through town every day.
The Arts & Business Connection of Dayton, a local affiliate of the Artisans Center of Virginia, is exploring opportunities for residents and students to prepare for the 'design economy.' It is preparing with the newly-established Artisans Courtyard workshops on “homeshoring” in preparation for a Makerspace Lab with 3D printers.
The town also has:
- the second lowest local taxes in Virginia
- regional and local Farmers Markets
- highly fertile lands
- community-supported agriculture
- a small lake and artisan complex
- a cluster of downtown shops, restaurants, a B&B, and a museum
- active private community associations
- low crime
- convenient access to regional airport (SHV, 15 minutes) and private airports, a major highway (Route 81, six minutes), private rail freight links (8 minutes) and passenger rail services (30 minutes)
- three colleges and universities within 5-15 minutes drive (James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University, and Bridgewater College)
- a nearby private hospital (Rockingham Memorial Hospital)
- a reputation for friendly people; and
Property values average about 30-40 percent of those in the Washington, DC area. Food prices average about half that of those found in Northern Virginia's urban and suburban areas.
Local civic groups welcome ideas and inputs from resiliency-oriented doers and innovators. For further information, please contact Mark Frazier (Openworld) via Skype at 'openworld' or by email to mfrazier at openworld dot com.
